Maisie Dobbs isn’t just any young housemaid. Through her own natural intelligence—and the patronage of her benevolent employers—she works her way into college at Cambridge. When World War I breaks out, Maisie goes to the front as a nurse. It is there that she learns that coincidences are meaningful and the truth elusive. After the War, Maisie sets up on her own as a private investigator. But her very first assignment, seemingly an ordinary infidelity case, soon reveals a much deeper, darker web of secrets, which will force Maisie to revisit the horrors of the Great War and the love she left behind.

Review

Maisie Dobbs is a cute cozy mystery.  However, I found the mystery part got lost in the stream of Maisie’s history.  It felt like the author had forgotten what genre she was writing and merely popped back in last minute.  On a positive note, I found Maisie and her assistant Billy to be engaging characters and read onward to learn more about them.

As I look back through my “Goodreads Progress” I realize that while I enjoyed the book overall I found the ending to have an M. Night Shyamalan twist to it (I see dead people anyone)? I’m not sure that really helped the development of the plot but the author did tie all loose ends together and left Maisie and Billy open for character growth.

Overall, Maisie Dobbs is an enjoyable mystery for a rainy day but I’m not sure I will be continuing her journey of becoming a private investigator.

  1. I wish you enjoyed it more. Maybe you’ll find another cozy mystery to get really invested in. I haven’t read hardly any cozy mysteries. Personally, any food themes and shops probably what I’m wanting to read. I like your rating system. I love your new design!

    • It wasn’t bad, just not to my taste. I’ve been reading the Flavia de Luce series for a while and have really been enjoying that, so I’ll probably go back to my old faithful. Thank you for the kind comment on my rating system and design!
