A Review in Bullet Points
Salvage the Bones was a drudge to get through.
- Too wordy and overuse of similes. The novel felt like it had been written by like, a valley girl.
- Dog fighting — way too much dogfighting.
- The novel felt contrived. Jesmyn Ward took a period of time that was sure to evoke emotions and twisted it to her liking. The forced nature just didn’t work for me.
- The ending was basically Old Yeller. I know exactly how Phoebe Buffay feels.
Salvage the Bones should have left me saying wow. Instead, I’ll quote Phoebe Buffay, “My Eyes! My Eyes!!”
You had me at dogfighting. I just can’t read about that.
