Why I’ve Never Been to Disney & Spotlight on The Great Disneyland Scavenger Hunt

Disney was a huge part of my childhood. The first movie I saw in the theater was a re-release of Lady and the Tramp, I don’t remember much of it but look very happy in the picture. Although, my true love for the Mouse in pants did not begin until age three when I discovered a little movie that featured seven dwarfs. I was obsessed with Snow White. She was the reason why I learned how to work the VCR (in my Snow White costume of course), I had themed parties, and my room was a living shrine with merchandise. Anyway, whether it be childhood reminiscence or because I’m a sucker for happily ever afters I have always held a special place in my heart for Disney.

When I was eleven my family moved to Missouri. While our home was being built we lived in a small apartment and were always looking for excuses to get out and explore. One weekend my dad gave my brother and I an ultimatum. We could either go to Disney World or take a weekend trip to Hannibal, Missouri, to show you how desperate we were my brother and I chose Mark Twain over Mickey Mouse. Instead of a tour of Cinderella’s Castle we visited the boyhood home of Samuel Clemens. Rather than posing with princesses, we had photo ops with Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatcher.

I would have taken the annoying “it’s a small world after all” theme over this weekend trip any day of the week, and being the gullible children we were never thought a parent would deprive their child of a tea-cup ride. True to his word, our dad upheld our choice and at the ripe old age of 31, I have yet to cross the gates of the happiest place on earth.

Therefore, I must live vicariously through others and magical films and books, an example being The Great Disneyland Scavenger Hunt by Catherine F. Olen, an enchanting look at the land of Disney.
