Spam

Posted January 13, 2012 by Whitney in Blogging / 6 Comments

Since the beginning of the new year my blog has received a large amount of spam.  Obviously, this is annoying and unappreciated.  For instance, my “going classic” post received 23 comments, but only seven weren’t trying to sell me flowers and jewelery.    For present, I have set my comments to moderation, and will see how that works.  Has anyone had to deal with this issue?  If so, how did you handle it?  I apologize if this is an inconvenience to my fellow readers.

  1. I've noticed a real upswing in the number of spam comments in the last 8 months or so. Not sure why, but I moderate all comments now before I publish them. Though my spam is considerably less classy than yours if you're only getting hit up for flowers & jewelry!

  2. I'm not sure how blogger handles spam. I'm on WP and installed Akismet. It does a really good job of taking care of spam. I'm wondering if blogger might have something similar? Good Luck!

  3. In the last month I've gotten a barrage of spam comments which is so unusual — most come from a spam wordpress account, so I think that's why Blogger isn't catching them as spam. I still have comments on posts two weeks old or newer to be unmoderated for ease but if it keeps up I might have to change it…

  4. Like Teresa, I use Akismet for my WP blog. On Blogger, you can use word verification to weed out the bots, but other than that, I think you're stuck with moderating the comments.
