“By the pricking of my thumbs…something wicked this way comes.”
Ray Bradbury has dramatized his literary classic, Something Wicked This Way Comes, into this first-class audio drama, produced by The Colonial Radio Theatre on the Air, complete with a full cast, sound effects, and original music.

“Cooger and Dark’s Pandemonium Shadow Show” comes to Greentown, Illinois, one week before Halloween. Two boys, Jim Nightshade and Will Halloway, soon discover the evil of this carnival, which promises to make your every wish and dream come true. But with those wishes and dreams comes a price that must be paid. Behind the mirrors and the mazes is the nightmare of a lifetime.

First Impressions

Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury reminded me of The Nightmare Before Christmas. It was quirky enough to impress but eerie at the same time.

Impressions While Reading

I had always wanted to read something by Ray Bradbury and with my renewed interest in reading books that were adapted to movies, I thought this would be a good place to start. It might have been a good place to start if I had not listen to a live recording audiobook. It was a bit grainy and some of the characters were voiced by children. The high-pitched, precocious noise was too much for me to bear and merely annoyed me.

Final Impressions

Otherwise, I thought the story was good and creepy, with a carnival ending akin to that of Strangers on a Train. I cannot deny that Bradbury is a master of suspense and can see myself trying something else by him at a later date. Although, perhaps next time it will be in a written format.

  1. I’m planning to feature this for Witch Week this year – I’ve never read it thought I liked other books by Bradbury (The Martian Chronicles was a childhood favorite). I will definitely go for the written version rather than this audiobook.

    • I’d definitely suggest the written version. I’ll have to try The Martian Chronicles in a written format — it sounds interesting.
