Weekly Prompt:

Q: 5 Favorite Book Boyfriends.

A:

  • Mr. Darcy: I love his aloof nature with an 1800s “bad boy swagger”  His intellect, and mysterious kind heart have always made me swoon too.   And I adore anyone who is as kind to a sister as he is with his Georgiana.  Lastly, and this is more a gush over the book but I love his ability to banter.  Unfortunately, this literary crush has set my standards to unrealistic proportions.
  • Rhett Butler: He is a bit like a hooker with a heart of gold.  Due to scandal he isn’t received in any decent home in Charleston {not even his own}  but strangely enough, that makes him more interesting and desirable.  While he may appear to be nothing more than a scalawag   blockade runner he can be kind hearten and thoughtful to those he deems deserving.  I love any man who can use sarcasm successfully and the fact that Captain Butler is played by Clark Gable in the 1939 film is just a bonus!
  • The Scarlet Pimpernel: He is charming, cunning, witty (he did come up with that catchy song) and Percy can sword fight.
  • Severus Snape:  He has a disturbed look about him with an angry at the world sneer plastered across his face 99% of the time.  So why do I love him? It couldn’t possibly be his good looks as he’s described as having greasy hair and a long hooked nose and let’s face it, he has a horrible bedside manner.  But, deep down there’s some good in him and underneath the resentment towards certain students there is a protective side to Severus, which he refuses to let break through.  Also, he’s brilliant at magic, mastering potions, dark arts and occlumency.  He also put Professor  Lockheart to shame after mercifully defeating him at a dueling match in book two.  Lastly, there’s that whole double agent thing.
  • Atticus Finch is attractive, and not just as Gregory Peck.  First, he is a single working dad who still finds time to teach his youngest, headstrong daughter Scout morels of life, treating her like an adult in such matters and hope to tame her “wild ways”.  Secondly, he is one of the best shooters in the county but chooses not to brag about this accomplishment, feeling that it may not want to be the reflection he wants to bestow upon his children Jem and Scout, and that there are more admirable qualities than being a good shots man.  Thirdly, and this plays a major part of the novel, is his belief  in Tom Robinson and his innocence in the crime of rape that has been committed, with Atticus never stopping to fight for what he believes in.   Another example of this is of Atticus’s strong opinion that there is nothing wrong with Boo Radley and that his children should leave him alone in peace.  I find this last statement extremely hot, as I love anyone who is willing to look past a persons disadvantages and see them for the good person that they are.  I shall end with one of my favorite quotes “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view-until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.”

Outside, I could hear the sound of airplanes, and their rumble filled me with unease. The only thing worse would be the wail of a bomb siren. I bit my lip and hurried to grab my bag.

She felt as though she was holding something that was a secret.
“Hidden beauty,” he said, closing his eyes. It is always the best kind of all.

My Thoughts

I’ve always loved book set in WWII. The Velvet Hours seems lovely written and am curious as to what that “hidden beauty” is.

As Paris teeters on the edge of the German occupation, a young French woman closes the door to her late grandmother’s treasure-filled apartment, unsure if she’ll ever return.
An elusive courtesan, Marthe de Florian cultivated a life of art and beauty, casting out all recollections of her impoverished childhood in the dark alleys of Montmartre. With Europe on the brink of war, she shares her story with her granddaughter Solange Beaugiron, using her prized possessions to reveal her innermost secrets. Most striking of all are a beautiful string of pearls and a magnificent portrait of Marthe painted by the Italian artist Giovanni Boldini. As Marthe’s tale unfolds, like velvet itself, stitched with its own shadow and light, it helps to guide Solange on her own path.
Inspired by the true account of an abandoned Parisian apartment, Alyson Richman brings to life Solange, the young woman forced to leave her fabled grandmother’s legacy behind to save all that she loved.

    • Thank you for your thoughts on my loading time, It had seemed a little bogged down but recently removed Disqus and it seems to be loading faster now.

  1. Severus Snape is definitely one of my favourite characters from Harry Potter, his unrequited yet unconditional love towards Lily drove him to protect Harry in the most unusual ways (hence the double agent thing), and it was such an admirable aspect of Snape. To be honest, Harry Potter books wouldn’t be the same without him. Love your pick!

    • I’m a sucker for unrequited love. I agree with all you said and have to add that it always made me sad that the best part of Snape was kept hidden.

    • Thank you for your thoughts. I’m actually on Firefox but I have two wireless networks to pick from. I switched and the site seems to be going much faster for me now.

    • It is different from the books you usually share — although they are always interesting! Thank you taking the time to stop by and comment.

  2. Your blog loaded smoothly.

The Velvet Hours sounds wonderful, and I, too, love books set in WWII. Maybe because I was born during those years? LOL.

I especially enjoy books set in Paris, as I have a lot to learn about the effects of that war there. Thanks for sharing, and for visiting my blog.

    • I enjoy books set in Paris too, it is such a beautiful settting! Thank you for letting me know my blog is loading smoothly and for taking the time to comment.

  3. I am not sure how fast your blog loaded. I open three at a time so one is always loaded since my internet tends to be a bit on the slower side during the weekends.

Books set during WWII are hit or miss for me so I am not sure. I do however love books set in Paris.

    Happy Friday!

  4. Hello. New follower via bloglovin. I only know of Mr. Darcy and Rhett Butler. Atticus Finch sounds interesting. Love a hero with family. Great quote too.

    • I love Atticus Finch. I think the best modern comparison is Monica Geller’s boyfriend Richard Burke from Friends. He is the smart, sexy older man.

    • Thank you for the Twitter follow! I honestly think Snape is underrated in the book boyfriend department. Sure he has greasy hair but there is just something about him, particularly when played by Alan Rickman.
