December Classics Club Meme

The Classics Club monthly meme is another way to bring members of The Classics Club together. The post for the month will go up on the main page of this blog on the 2nd of the month, and you’ll have all month to respond over at your blog.

Q: What is your favorite memory of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol? Have you ever read it? If not, will you? Why should others read it rather than relying on the film adaptions?

A: I first read Dicken’s A Christmas Carol in 7th grade and didn’t leave an impression on me one way or the other.  I do vividly remember discussing The Ghost of Christmas Future and thinking how weird it was that people were fighting over Mr. Scrooge’s possessions after his death.  A strange thing to remember.  I didn’t read it again until a few years ago.  Because of that, I really don’t have a favorite memory, other than the fact that I enjoyed it in my older age.  Although, since I was about ten I have watched the 1938 version of A Christmas Carol starring Reginald Owen back to back with It’s A Wonderful Life (there are a lot of red-eyes at my house that day).

This brings me to the second part of the question, why should others rely on the book rather than it’s adaptations?  Why, because Jim Carrey voicing Scrooge doesn’t hold the same magic, Tiny Tim isn’t even as cute when portrayed by Mickey Mouse’s son.  I think (no matter how good) a film adaptation would be like Christmas cookies without the sprinkles, it just isn’t the same, and I now realize Christmas would not be the same without it.
