Custom Domain Name?

Lately I’ve been thinking, should I get a custom domain name?  I got on Go Daddy and it is a lot cheaper than I thought it would be, but I’m a little nervous or hesitant on the matter.  I’ve looked at tutorials and it seems to be relatively easy (and I’m sure they have Custom Domain Name for Dummies for people like me).  People can be creatures of habit and I have gotten use to blogspot. (note: Blogger auto-corrected blogspot to “bloodspot” which made me tee-hee).  Anyway…while it is intimidating I have always been annoyed by all the dashes in my url: she-is-too-fond-of-books.blogspot.com, it is a mouthful to say when giving people my address “My blog is She is too fond of books, but it has hyphens between each word.” Not only is it a mouthful but also a little immature, lacking in professionalism.

When I started blogging I loved Louisa May Alcott’s quote “She is too fond of books and it has turned her brain” little did I know that another book blog had also claimed the name.  Okay, maybe not original but it still fit me perfectly, the important thing is that I like it as it is my space.  I then found out that the url  for sheistoofondofbooks was already taken along with other variations.  I apparently wanted that url badly and added the hyphens.

After four years I’m thinking about moving it.  My question (and it might be silly) is: after 4 years is it too late to change and if anyone has made the switch what service did you use and how hard was it?

  1. I just bought mine about 6 months ago. I used GoDaddy and I set it up through Blogger. It was very easy. All you have to do is go to Settings > Basic and then go down to where it says "Setup a 3rd party URL for your blog." Once you click on that, you just enter the domain you purchased. I was surprised at how painless it was.

I prefer Blogger's interface over WordPress. Much easier to use. After creating my Anne Rice challenge blog on WordPress last week, I decided I won't be doing that again. What would have taken me an hour or so on Blogger ended up taking me at least six hours. Not really sure exactly how long, but it was a pain. I know a lot of people tout WordPress, but I have never had any problems with Blogger and I have 13 blogs on Blogger.

Good luck with your decision. Hope I was of some help. 🙂

  2. I looked at WordPress when I first started blogging and it felt intimidating, blogger seemed easier to navigate so here I am! I've always been impressed by how many blogs you have (and keep running) that takes a lot of time and dedication on your part. Thank you for the mini-directions and painless encouragement.

On a side note, I plan on joining your Anne Rice Challenge too. I've only read the first book in her vampire series and would like to read the rest of them.
