Cranford Read-Along

Posted May 19, 2010 by Whitney in read-along / 12 Comments

The results are in and Allie at A Literary Odyssey is hosting a read-along(s) one being Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathon Swift and Cranford by Elizabeth Gaskell  I am participating  in Cranford.

A short description of the book via Goodreads:

“A gently comic picture of life in an English country town in the mid-nineteenth century, Cranford describes the small adventures of Miss Matty and Miss Deborah, two middle- aged spinster sisters striving to live with dignity in reduced circumstances. Rich with humor and filled with vividly memorable characters—including the dignified Lady Glenmire and the duplicitous showman Signor Brunoni—Cranford is a portrait of kindness, compassion, and hope.”
And Allie’s reading schedule:
Since Cranford is a relatively short book, I decided to have two days for posting. There are 16 chapters, so a post on chapters 1-8 can be made on June 15th (a Tuesday). I will have a post up with my own thoughts. You can write your post and I will link to everyone’s reviews here on my blog.

The second and final posting can be done on June 30th (a Wednesday). Again, I will have a post up and will link to everyone’s reviews so that you may go and visit other people’s blogs to see their own thoughts as well!

  1. I think I might do this one! you are a bad influence you know I swear I find out about all these things on this blog

  2. Felicia– I really enjoy doing read-alongs & challenges because they motivate me to read books on my tbr or others I may not have heard of or read otherwise.

Missie– Great, I hope you enjoy it!

Jessica– I'm sorry, I really don't mean to be a bad influence! They're just creative ways to knock novels off my bookshelf 🙂

  3. This sounds really good…and Cranford is sitting near the top of my tbr pile. I'm having so much fun with the Wuthering Heights read-along that I may jump in here too!

  4. Thank you for posting! I am really excited about doing these read-alongs and I already have a good turn out for both!

  5. Kim–Great!

JoAnn–I'm having fun with the Wuthering Heights Read-Along too, so is partially why I joined Cranford.

Allie–Thank you for hosting! I'm really looking forward to this 🙂

  6. I'm glad to hear you are reading Cranford. I loved that story. It was great fun to read. I just read it not too long ago so I won't be joining in but I wanted to mention that there is a set of videos made of the story. I got them from the library. I think they were filmed by A & E or BBC. Anyway they really enhanced the Cranford experience for me. Good luck with you read-along.

  7. I need to get Cranford-I've seen the mini-series…I've also read Wives & Daughters and North & South by Gaskell. N&S is one of my all-time favorite books, you should read it if you haven't!

  8. Margot– This is my first endeavor into Elizabeth Gaskell and I'm really looking forward to it! I think the mini-series was through BBC but I'm not sure about it either. If my parents can stand getting Cranford via netflix I'll watch it later this month.

Allison–I have a friend who is reading Wives and Daughters right now and loving it! So I may read them at a later date.
