2: What book scared / scarred you as a child
My Grandparents would read my brother and I Der Struwwelpeter by Heinrich Hoffmann when we were little, a German children’s book of morals with dire consequences. It scared the shit out of us!
3: Name a recent children’s author who you wish had been writing when you were a child
Marissa Meyer, author of the Lunar Chronicles. These are probably considered young adult/teen but I love their originality and for a fairy tale retelling that is quite the feat.
4: If you could pair an illustrator and children’s author, who would they be?
Chris Van Allsburg and Roald Dahl
5: Your [hypothetical] children reach puberty and don’t really like reading but are willing to try something at your suggestion; what do you pick and why?
As it was my favorite unisex book growing up I’d pick Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach. I read it to pieces and thought even at the time that the story was uniquely creative.

7: Did you sneakily read books that would have been disapproved of by your family? What did you think of them?
When I was around twelve I decided I had to read Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire. My mom thought it was much too scary (which as a 28 year old now, I agree) and thus my twelve year-old-self would sneak a couple pages behind closed doors. I thought I was so rebellious!

My sisters favorite was Little House too! The Secret of the Old Clock was the first one I bought from the bookmobile 🙂

Personaly, I think Laura Ingalls Wilder and Nancy Drew are staples for any girl who begins reading at a young age (thus you and your sisters are awesome).
