Character Connection: Severus Snape

The Introverted Reader is hosting a weekly meme entitle Character Connection

We all have characters we love. Let’s spotlight these fantastic creations! Whether you want to be friends with them or you have a full-blown crush on them, you know you love them and want everyone else to love them too!

This week’s Literary crush is Severus Snape
From J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter Series

I am finally getting off my classics kick and going with something a little more modern,  Severus Snape.  He has a disturbed look about him with an angry at the world sneer plastered across his face 99% of the time.  So why do I love him? It couldn’t possibly be his good looks as he’s described as having greasy hair and a long hooked nose and let’s face it, he has a horrible bedside manner.  But, I think deep down there’s some good in him and underneath the resentment towards certain students there is a protective side to Severus, which he refuses to let break through.  Also, he’s brilliant at magic, mastering potions, dark arts and occlumency.  He also put Professor  Lockheart to shame after mercifully defeating him at a dueling match in book two.  Lastly, there’s that whole double agent thing.  I guess there are numerous reasons to crush Professor Severus Snape.

On a side note, this clip is one of my favorite scenes in both book and movie of The Prisoner of Azkaban, but Alan Rickman adds to the fantasticalness of it.

  1. I am a huge Harry Potter fan, and Snape is actually my favorite character in the series. Great analysis of Snape's character – he is the most complex person in the series, and his job is probably harder than Harry's – being a double agent and trying to pull wool over Voldemort's eyes is no joke!

Of course, there is the added bonus of watching the great Alan Rickman – what a voice and what great acting!

  2. Kals– Snape isn't for everyone, but he sure does make the series more enjoyable. I know, it's almost eerie how much we have in common 🙂

Book Mole– I think Snape is one of the most developed, interesting characters in the series. I couldn't see anyone other than Alan Rickman playing Severous Snape, and his delivery of lines is phenomenal, that's partially why I like the above scene so much.

  3. Oh Snape. If I could I would go back in time and wash his hair and date him. I do have a crush on Snape lol. Alan Rickman is amaizing!

  4. Ah, a Snape fan! I'm on the fence where he is concerned.
One of my favourite movie scenes is in the Philospher's Stone and Snape says to Harry, Ron and Hermione: "Now what are three young Gryffindors like yourselves doing inside on a day like this. People will think you're up to something." I say that line to myself all the time.

I guess love of Snape is about the power of redemption… You've got me thinking about morality.

  5. historyofshe– I concur!

Lindsey– Wash his hair indeed! Just one day at the beauty salon would do him a world of good.

Becky– I love that line in the first book too, it's just the beginning of great lines to come. I think you're right, some of the Snape appeal is the power of redemption.

  6. Snape was ALWAYS my favourite. I loved him and believed in him right from the very start. Everyone called him a villain and said he was this that and the next thing but I always loved him and promised he was just misunderstood.

And at the end of the last book – I couldn't see for crying so hard. Genuinely, I had to stop crying and read over again because I couldn't see for the tears!

  7. Juju– Does it surprise you that I'm a Snape fan? He's got a little modern day Heathcliff thing going on so maybe that's where it stems from.

Jake Kirk– Yes, Snape is full of surprises.

Priya Parmar– Snape is a definitely a superb name for such a mysterious character.

  8. I'm not a huge Snape fan, but I have a feeling that a re-read would endear him to me now that I know how everything turns out. I could never quite decide what was going on with him. Alan Rickman is absolutely perfect in this role!

  9. Snape confuses me. Each time I re-read the Potter series I hate him, then despise him, fear him, disbelieve him, then I pity him and finally totally agree with Harry when he says that he is one of the greatest men he's ever known. I love the adult emotions concerning Snape. James Potter was Lily's chosen one and they were very happily in love with each other….but..this unrequited undying love of Snape's is too pathetic!

  10. I've never been a fan of Snape, but I promise to look at him with fresh eyes next time I read one of the books.

Thanks for stopping by my site for the Blog Hop – I'm returning the favor 🙂

  11. Sullivan– An easy coincidence to make, Snape is awesome!

Jen G– I think the fact that you're never quite sure about Snape is part of his appeal. And hear, hear to Alan Rickman!

    Carrie–You boyfriend rocks!

Vaishnavi– Yes, so many emotions surround Snape, it makes for a very interesting and complex character.

    Kristi– Thanks for stopping by.

Nymeth– He is wonderful, isn't he?
