The Introverted Reader is hosting a weekly meme entitle Character Connection
We all have characters we love. Let’s spotlight these fantastic creations! Whether you want to be friends with them or you have a full-blown crush on them, you know you love them and want everyone else to love them too!
This week’s literary crush is Rhett Butler
from Margaret Mitchell’s Gone with the Wind
Rhett Butler is a bit like a hooker with a heart of gold.  Due to scandal he isn’t received in any decent home in Charleston {not even his own}  but strangely enough, that makes him more interesting and desirable.  While he may appear to be nothing more than a scalawag   blockade runner he can be kind hearten and thoughtful to those he deems deserving.  I love any man who can use sarcasm successfully and the fact that Captain Butler is played by Clark Gable in the 1939 film is just a bonus!

  1. I guess there is something about a really mean character. If they use sarcasm well, then it is easy to be attracted to them. There is also the element of being the person that breaks through that evil exterior. I can understand his appeal.

  2. Rhett was much too good for Scarlett. The only redeeming quality I think of for Scarlett, is her quick thinking to help the survival of Tara, but even then it wasn't done in the most tasteful way.

  3. I just watched this movie a few weeks ago, and I love Rhett. I'd have to agree with you though–there were at least a few times when I thought he was too good for Scarlett. But either way, I loved the movie. Great post! 🙂

  4. Oh, nice choice! I have this book sitting on my shelf but I'm a bit scared to start reading… it's huge! And the writing is so tiny. I will start it one day, though.

  5. Natalie — I love the movie too, a bit melodramatic at times but still fantastic.

Emidy — Yes, the book's size is quite daunting especially with tiny print; but it's hard to put down once you've started.

  6. i just introduced one of my students (16 yrs old) to gone with the wind and it is wonderful to see the instant rhett crush effect take place! great choice!

  7. I've only seen the movie, but I do have the book (tiny print and all!) at home waiting to be read. I agree that Rhett is almost too good for Scarlett, if only because she doesn't realize what she has.

    Great choice!
