Book Club Update

My mom and I went down to the coffee shop today where we wish to hold our book club, and gave a presentation to the two owners of the establishment.  Here is what we came up with:

My mother was elected moderator as she is the most outspoken and able to keep discussion going.  We plan to meet every six weeks at 7 p.m. with our first meeting being July 29th.  Each member will be responsible for their own book whether they beg borrow or steal.  Also, every book must be in paperback and a manageable size.  At the beginning of June we’ll post filers in the coffee shop and an advertisement in the paper. The first three books have already been selected and will collectively chose books as a group after that (maybe draw from a hat?)

Here are the first three titles:

  1. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
  2. Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris
  3. Angela’s Ashes by Frank McCourt

So excited!

  1. Thank you everyone! I may have to kick out anyone who dislikes The Book Thief, it's so good. No worries, I'm only kidding; I'm not that cruel but they may get a strong reprimand.

Sounds like you are off to a great start. I hope you get some good book clubbers. Book Thief — Yes! Have had Angelas Ashes on my bookshelf for a few years now, so I will tune in to your reading experience of it.

  3. Good Luck! I've hopped over from Crazy for Books, and I am so excited for you starting your own public book club! I belong to a book club with a bunch of teachers I work with (though we generally end up talking more about school than the book!). Sometimes I think it would be nice to get some outside perspectives as well. Congrats!

  4. Heather, Yours sounds like a lively book club! This will actually be my fourth club, the first was a group of teachers from my elementary school, but all they read were Harlequin Romances and their former pupil was reading Gone with the Wind, I felt a little wired. The second was very faith based i.e. praying before discussion, I hardly managed to make it through the first meeting, and the one I'm currently in is through the library, the books we read are fine but is based purely on whether they can get eight copies of it and it's a bit sterile. Maybe fourth times a charm?
