Q: “Who is hands-down the best literary hero, in your opinion? Likewise, who is the best heroine?”
A: I think the best literary hero is Samwise Gamgee. He is loyal, brave and rises to the occasion. Sam, is the dark horse in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Firstly, in The Two Towers, Sam never trusted Gollum, he found him to be sneaky and was only in it for him. This was proven when the sneak hands them to the monster Shelob, on a silver platter. Sam rises to the occasion kills the beast and after believing Frodo to be dead, is conflicted as to being disloyal and leave his master or continue with their quest. He chooses the second. Hello Bravery! Also, in Return of the King he helps Frodo find the courage not only to go on but to put the ring into the firey depths of Mordor. Sam is just cool.
My favorite heroine is Scarlet O’Hara, she has gumption. She works on the plantation picking cotton after the war to stay alive and when the rent is raised on Tara tries to sell herself to Rhett in order to pay it. While this is probably not the most admirable quality it shows a determination and that itself is admirable. Even though, Atlanta is evacuating due to a Yankee invasion, she not only stays with Melanie as she goes in to labor but also helps with the birth. Did I mention that she shot a Yankee who tried to steal from her beloved Tara? Scarlet is bad-ass!
